Introduction: Duke hubs! In addition to the well-known rims, Duke also has hubs in their range. These hubs are characterized by a low weight, excellent sealing and very good bearings (identical to the DT Swiss 240 EXP). The freewheel is made of titanium and has a star-ratchet transmission with a high number of engagement points. If you are thinking: I recognize this from a well-known Belgian brand of hubs, then that is absolutely correct. Erase Components was indeed responsible for the manufacture of these beautiful hubs. We have been familiar with the MadMax hubs with the straight-pull design for a while. A new line of hubs has now been added: the BadBoy. This hub has a classic/j-bend design. To measure is to know! This is a so called ERD measuring device. ERD stands for "Effective Rim Diameter”. You now may be wondering why this would be important for your wheels? To guarantee a long service life and the best quality, it is crucial that each wheel is built with exactly the right spoke length. To achieve this, each rim must be measured individually to account for any deviation from the standard ERD size of the rim. And we do that with this specially designed ERD ruler. A special calculation program then calculates the correct spoke length for each wheel based on the measurement data. At Wheel-Tec we have an enormous collection of spokes (>150,000!), accurate to the millimetre.This way we prevent unnecessarily long and ugly buttings that you regularly see with post-cut spokes. 2012 – 2023 In 2012 we built this Notubes Alpha 340-400 – Chris King R45 wheelset for John. After many cycling kilometers, the rims are worn out and need to be replaced. The R45 hub set is very durable and has proved to be well maintained, meaning it can last a lifetime. No reason to replace it, despite its age. The R45 therefore only received cleaning and maintenance. We replaced the Alpha rims with a modern wide full carbon rim, the Tailwind SLS19 45-50 with a durable HMX braking layer. John now rides around again with a modern, sleek steering and efficient pedaling new wheelset, with the familiar “buzzing bee” freewheeling sound of his R45 hubs. 30mm rims and 2.35 tyres: the ultimate mountain bike experience? Wouter asked us for wheel advice with the following goals: light carbon rims, more speed and control for MTB rides involving a lot of climbing and descending In a wheel consultation, we always consider the wheels in conjunction with the entire mountainbike and its rider. Hence why the ideal tire size is always discussed first before we can determine the best fitting rim. Wider XC-MTB tires (2.3 - 2.4”) are ridden at lower pressures and generate more grip and increase control. Rolling resistance is reduced and “buoyancy” on loose surfaces such as sand is improved. Ultimate mullet set Matthew came to us to build the ultimate mullet wheelset. A mullet wheelset consists of a 29” front wheel and 27.5” rear wheel. This is often used in the Freeride-Downhill range. A mullet setup can provide more control and clearance on steep descents and significantly lower rear wheel weight. For this wheelset we used the following configuration: Rims: FliteX-30. Our innovative bike park rim with special flex zones and in-mould spoke holes. The internal rim width of 31mm makes it suitable for the 2.4-2.5 tires that Matthew wants to use. Hubs: ERASE V2. The MTB hubs from ERASE are a jewel both technically and optically. Light, strong and standard with a 60T ratchet transmission and a titanium body. Today we take a look at the internals of the new Hope PRO5 rear hub. In the video we disassemble it partly and rebuild it. What's new? The drive is now provided by 2 groups of 3 pawls which are mounted in offset. In other words: the groups engage in turn on the 54 teeth of the gear ring, resulting in no less than 108 engagement points instead of 44 for the previous model (PRO4). Furthermore, lighter pawl springs have been mounted with less spring pressure, which ensures less noise and lower freewheel resistance. Our Favorite Wheel Building Tools -Part 1- One of our favorites is actually a combination of 2 tools + a certain spoke nipple. This concerns the T-spoke wrench from DT-Swiss and a spoke holder designed by ourselves (the Ying-Yang from Dutch-WheelWorks). We use this to be able to reach the so-called double square spoke nipples from the rim side instead of working from the traditionally used inside. Tailwind ULS 23-55 X Chris King R45 Ard wanted to discuss the right wheels for his new Pinarello Dogma with us. His wish list for the rims: aero 55mm deep, light and wide for 28mm tubeless tires. For the hubs he made a strict demand: the Chris King R45 with its unique buzzing bee freewheel sound! For the rims, the choice fell on the Tailwind ULS23-55. This rim has everything you would expect from an ultra-modern rim and more: 23mm internal, tubeless-hookless, very stable and, despite the impressive 5mm height, only weighs 435(!) grams of rim weight. He chose to replace the Tailwind SLS21-58 rims of his current wheelset with wider Tailwind AR45 Endurance rims. His beloved navy blue Chris King hubs were reused. Result: the lighter and wider (from 21mm to 25mm internally) AR45 rims form a perfect platform for mounting 30mm tires. More comfort, more grip and lower rolling resistance. Paul's BMC Paul came to us for a set of custom wheels for his new BMC. During the personal consultation, Paul indicated a number of wishes: aero and all-round, yet reactive and light enough for mountain use. In addition: modern width for the mounting of 28-30mm wide tubeless tires. In the end, we jointly arrived at a wheel configuration of the following components: • Tailwind ULS23-45 rims: 45mm high, 23mm internal width, : 375 grams rim, tubeless ready, state- of-the-art material use, and embossed matte black decals. • DT-Swiss 350 2023 hubs: the surprise of 2023. Light, very durable, a very favorable price-quality ratio and now standard with a 36T ratchet. • Sapim CxRay aero spokes: for years the reference in the field of light steel aero spokes • Sapim DSQ polyax alu spoke nipples: stronger than standard nipples and the polyaxis or round head shape always ensures a perfect fit with the spoke hole in the rim. Arjan came to us for a wheelset for his special custom build Trek Madone. His Wishlist contained a combination of aero, low weight, modern width and a unique appearance, matching the custom paint job of the new bike. The new Duke Baccara X rims are modern with 23mm internal width and combine low weight with unprecedented construction strength. The beautiful glossy finish is achieved without any post- processing, they come straight out of the mold. The 56mm deep version turned out to best suit Arjen's wishes. The hub set was chosen for the latest piece of precision technology from the Extralite hub family: the Hypersmart. Incredibly light and with a wonderful 48T ratchet sound. 48 ultra-light BERD Polylight “spaghetti” spokes and as many purple Sapim Polyax spoke nipples hold it all together. The shoelace spokes! Shoelaces or not? These are actually real spokes, the BERD polylight. Flexible as a shoelace, but looks can be deceiving. BERD spokes are actually stronger than steel. BERD spokes have 12x the weight-to-strength ratio of steel, are so light that they float on water (!), and are impervious to weathering. Fratelli FX28XC-OC x Duke MadMax Roy came to us with the wish for a light, yet robust XC-marathon Mountainbike wheelset, based on aluminum rims. The basis was chosen for FX28XC-OC dynamal rims from Fratelli Industries, the top premium aluminium rim builder of the moment. The internal width of 28mm matches perfectly with the intended use of 2.25” wide tires. The ideal spoke configuration for Roy achieved with 28 Sapim Laser spokes in the front wheel and 28 Sapim D-Light spokes in the rear wheel. To measure is to know! This is a so called ERD measuring device. ERD stands for "Effective Rim Diameter”. You now may be wondering why this would be important for your wheels? To guarantee a long service life and the best quality, it is crucial that each wheel is built with exactly the right spoke length. To achieve this, each rim must be measured individually to account for any deviation from the standard ERD size of the rim. And we do that with this specially designed ERD ruler. A special calculation program then calculates the correct spoke length for each wheel based on the measurement data. At Wheel-Tec we have an enormous collection of spokes (>150,000!), accurate to the millimetre. This way we prevent unnecessarily long and ugly buttings that you regularly see with post-cut spokes. In 2019 we helped @grs_engineering to design their "The Kraken" wheel destressing tool. Modern materials made the wheels so stiff that destressing them purely by hand actually got less reliable. This tool destresses the wheel much more evenly and 100%, without putting the high peek loads on the material when you destress them by hand.
